#instahistory Quick Fact: This week in 1937 the Chinese city (and then capital) of Nanking falls to Japanese forces. Part of the Sino-Japanese War, following the capture of the city Japanese soldiers undertook one of the most notorious atrocities of the 20th Century: the Nanking Massacre (also known as the "Rape of Nanking"). Following Japan's attack on the United States at Pearl Harbor the Sino-Japanese War would become part of the Second World War: culminating in Japanese defeat at the hands of the Allies in September 1945. #history #Nanking #Japan #China #US #UK #Allies #Sino-JapaneseWar #WW2 #SecondWorldWar #lestweforget #atrocity #BattleofNanking #RapeofNanking #instafilm #sundayspecial #historybutawesome #historyfactor

#instahistory Quick Fact: This week in 1941 German forces launch Operation Typhoon in an attempt to capture Moscow. Mindful of the approaching Russian winter, Hitler attempted a final push to eliminate his enemy following the stunning victories his army achieved in the wake of Operation Barbarossa’s launch in June of that year. However, strong Soviet resistance and the onset of an early winter halted the German advance – a subsequent Soviet counteroffensive pushed the Germans back, saving the city, and ultimately the Soviet Union, from defeat. #history #turningpoint #OperationTyphoon #BattleOfRussia #BattleOfMoscow #OperationBarbarossa #SecondWorldWar #ww2 #wwii #Russia #Germany #Nazi #SovietUnion #EasternFront #victory #defeat #war #conflict #warfare #instafilm #sundayspecial #historybutawesome #historyfactor

#instahistory Quick Fact: This week in 1940 Churchill delivers his iconic “ "Never was so much owed by so many to so few” speech. Delivered at the height of the Battle of Britain, when Nazi Germany was on the brink of total victory in Western Europe, it helped inspire Britain to victory. “The Few” has become the nickname of the Allied aircrew of Fighter Command who won the Battle of Britain against Hitler’s seemingly invincible Luftwaffe. #history #TheFew #Churchill #WinstonChurchill #BattleofBritain #Britain #greatbritain #UnitedKingdom #victory #RAF #RoyalAirForce #FighterCommand #speech #inspire #inspiration #Nazi #Germany #Defeat #Luftwaffe #war #conflict #SecondWorldWar #ww2 #wwii #aircraft #London #instafilm #sundayspecial #historybutawesome

#instahistory Quick Fact: This week in 1942 the Battle of Midway ends in US victory. In perhaps the most important naval battle of the Second World War, American dive bombers destroy four Japanese aircraft carriers to the loss of one. Japanese defeat not only thwarted her leaders plans to destroy the US Pacific fleet and capture the island of Midway – a base within striking distance of Hawaii itself – but gave the strategic initiative to the United States. Japan’s six months of running wild had come to an end. #history #midway #ww2 #secondworldwar #pacificwar #victory #usa #conflict #war #warfare #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #japan #japanese #defeat #sundayspecial #instafilm #historybutawesome #historyfactor

#instahistory Quick Fact: This week in 1946 Winston Churchill gives his Sinews of Peace address in Fulton, Missouri (popularly known as the “Iron Curtain speech”) Although not enthusiastically received at the time – the Soviet Union still considered an ally of the United States and Western Europe – the phrase “Iron Curtain” would soon be used as a metaphor to describe the division of Europe during the Cold War; the “curtain” being used by the Soviet Union to keep information out and its people in. #history #IronCurtain #ColdWar #Europe #EasternEurope #EasternBloc #communism #authoritarianism #totalitarianism #WesternEurope #ColdWar #SovietUnion #UnitedStates #Churchill #WinstonChurchill #anniversary #division #conflict #war #instafilm #sundayspecial #historybutawesome #historyfactor

#Instahistory is back! Thank you for all the support in 2015. Stay tuned for the latest #instahistory’s of the week ahead on Sunday evenings. This week in 1916 the Gallipoli campaign comes to a close when Allied forces are evacuated from the peninsular after 8 months of bitter fighting. The campaign was an attempt to quickly knock the #OttomanEmpire out of #WW1 but ended in unexpected and humiliating failed for the Allies. Ottoman victory laid the basis for the Turkish War of Independence after WW1 and the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The campaign also played a large part in the national consciousness of #Australia and #NewZealand, owing to the large number of soldiers who fought heroically on the peninsular. Approximately 500,000 men were lost from both sides in the campaign. #history #anniversary #1916 #FirstWorldWar #campaign #battlefield #conflict #battle #war #warfare #Turkey #Victory #Allied #Defeat #instafilm #sundayspecial #historyfactor #historybutawesome
